Gastroenterology Associates Expands Patient Services – Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)
MAY 2015
Gastroenterology Associates continues to expand its patient services with the addition of one of the most important advancements in the GI specialty over the last several years. We now offer the endoscopic method of Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) for removal of large colon polyps.
The EMR procedure can eliminate the need for surgery to remove large polyps with a much lower cost and considerable decreased risk.
Dr. John Meier has recently been awarded STAR certification in lower GI EMR by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), with demonstrated proficiency in the advanced techniques required for EMR. Dr. Meier has been performing colonoscopy since 1990.
EMR is an advanced technique during which the base of the polyp is injected with solution to lift or separate the polyp from deeper intestinal layers. The polyp is then removed in large sections and the tissue is sent to a pathologist for evaluation.
Colon polyps are growths on the lining of the colon or rectum. Over time, some polyps can become cancerous, and removing polyps markedly reduces the risk of cancer of the colon and rectum.
